Caribbean night at the Athletic!

Just before their night out on the town, Rhiwbina's Caribbean trio of Bob Cooper, Paul and Malcolm Mitchell stopped off to reach the final of Cardiff Athletic's charity triples event on Friday, 11 July. Unfortunately they lost in the final to Cardiff Bus, but must have won the prize - after this week's rain - for most optimistic costumes.

Rhiwbina Bowls Club's Top Ten Tournament

Rhiwbina's bowlers won the first Top Ten Tournament hosted by the home club on July 6th. Competing against invited teams from the local area - Whitchurch, Whitchurch Hospital and St. Fagans - Rhiwbina gained 17 of the 24 points on offer in this singles, pairs, triples and rinks competition; St.Fagans finished in second place with 11 points, just edging past Whitchurch on shots difference.

Leading the way for Rhiwbina was Colin Wood, who won all 3 of his singles matches, the first on a tie-break after a 1-1 sets result; in the second, Colin won one set and drew the other to claim the points and finished the day with a 2-0 sets victory. The Rhiwbina rink of Sid Scannell, Derek Hyde, Graham Griffiths and Ian Kelly also went through the day undefeated, with 2 wins and a draw (17-13, 13-13, 17-12). In the triples competition, David Rundle, Paul and Malcolm Mitchell won the opening and closing matches 24-11 and 15-8, whilst narrowly losing the second match 18-19. After losing both their earlier matches (8-22, 11-13), Rhiwbina pair Jack Harris and Mike Allen won the final game of the day 18-15 to claim another 2 points.

The club is grateful to the Recreation Club for its sponsorship of this event, which proved to be a popular format in its inaugural year. As winners, Rhiwbina received a prize of £200, with £100 going to the runners-up. It is hoped that the competition can be repeated in the future.

On the final Sunday of the season, the day after our Captain's versus Vice-Captain's match, the club will host a group of Canadian bowlers in a mixed tour match. The tourists are visiting Rhiwbina as the only stop in Wales during a UK bowling holiday organised by DeNure Tours. Full details will be given later.

County Selection

Congratulations to 4 of our bowlers on their selection for the South Glamorgan Over 60s Championship side.
Three of them - Colin Wood, David Rundle, and Derek Hyde -  have represented the 'golden oldies' previously, but 'youngster' Mike Allen has only just crept into the necessary age bracket.

The first match for the county side was against Ceredigion at Llanbradach on Tuesday, 3 June. South Glamorgan won by 135 - 88. In the second match at Welshpool against Montgomeryshire on 17 June , South Glamorgan gained an equally convincing win by 133-96. All four of our bowlers again played a part in the victory. The third match at Llanbradach also resulted in a win for the home county, by 131 - 93 shots.

The final section match against the Vale of Glamorgan took place on July 15 at Barry, where South Glamorgan suffered a first defeat by 119 - 104 shots, although winning on 4 rinks. This result means that any one of the Vale, South or Mid Glamorgan could still win the section and go through to the final at Llandrindod in August. The outcome will depend upon the final match between the Vale and Mid Glamorgan at the end of July.

County Competitions

Congratulations to David Rundle, our only representative to reach the semi-final stage of the South Glamorgan CBA competitions. David failed in his bid to reach the final, but enjoyed a good run in the over 60s singles competition.
